Letters from Camp: One of those days!

Camp-Participant-2015-Web-Banner

Well, I had plans about what I wanted to post today, but… it was one of those days!  Honestly, it has been one of those months lately!  While I have all these wonderful creatures to dance and play with.  Having spent time with the dryads and nymphs.  Swimming with the mermaids, riding the unicorns, and hiding from the harpies, the words have just been elusive!

It is camp! Time to write with this literary abandon! Enjoy the journey and travel out with my characters wherever the trail leads, and yet… here I stand. My tent is pitched, I have my hiking gear one, and an awesome bag of trail mix, not to mention the great map with tons of trails to explore, and yet… it would seem that Melody really doesn’t want to come out to play!

I am at a loss! I have tried everything I can think of to entice her out.  Yet the story still sits there! three scenes total! That is all I really have left.  Maybe four, if I want to add a bit more to the framework.  That is nothing! Ten thousand words I figured, no problem!  And I am standing here, like… maybe they forgot me? The bus for camp left early this year?  I don’t know!

What do you do when you are stuck?  What is one sure fire way for you to get your characters to talk to you when they are silent?  Do you have any go-to tools for the silence?

Reflection of a Writer

mugshot1Writing is one of the best forms of therapy out there, I believe.  That said, I really and truly believe that what we write reflects a story of ourselves as writers.  There are things that can be learned about us, if one were to want to look at the things we write.  How characters relate, the things they yearn for, and the things they run from.  I think that is part of the appeal to writing for me.  That little bit of sharing or maybe I should say baring of the soul!

Deep down, I think that is part of the challenge of writing.  Not so much the sharing, but the facing things that reflect me through the veil of someone else.  There is a safety in it, but when you can’t lie to yourself, when life makes you see through things, it actually can make it that much harder.  Facing ourselves through our characters, becoming someone new, transformation… These are all reasons I love to write, and I think fear it at the same time.

What about you? What kind of reflections do you see when you write?  What is the challenging part of writing to you?  Who do you see in your characters?  In their challenges?

Getting Ready

Camp NaNo will soon be upon us once more!  I have decided that I will rework Vampires Prophecy.  I am looking forward to that.  My hope is to get it up to par with where I have Mo Thuras, to that end I have been trying to brainstorm more scenes.

Thus far a rather sad attempt.  I am sitting at only 18 as of right now, while Mo Thuras has 44!  That just tells me I have a ways to go, but at least I know a lot of the backstory so that is a start.

What about you?  Are you going to be joining me for Camp NaNo?  If so, what is your writing flavor for the month?  How many words are you working towards?  If not, why not?  What is holding you back?

A Short Poll for Letters of Questioning!

LettersofQuestioning

I am excited to announce that the Letters of Questioning should be coming back as of next month once a week for the summer!  (Maybe longer if we can swing it!)  That said I would love to hear from you! my readers what you would love to see in future installments.  With that in mind I created a short poll and please do not hesitate to add your own to the list!  In fact, please! do that rather than use those I have provided.  You can come back as often as you like and add to it!  Share it with your friends!

Also, as a quick sidenote, I have updated all previous postings of our letters, adding in Dreamland’s responses!

Almost Half Way

And here it is… almost half way through November, through NaNoWriMo and I have not been posting to my blog.  I could say it is that I am hard at work writing, but that is not true.  Well, I am hard at work writing, but I am also just living life, I have thought about my blog, about how I want to be writing for it, but then… I just let it go.

You know those wants, the ones that we see, we know it is part of our dream, part of our personal goals, and yet… we are just too lazy or afraid or who knows what to actually do.  That is what I have let my blog become.  Well, I am hoping to change that.  We will see wont we? *smiles*

How about a quick NaNo update…

I am actually managing to stay pretty close to par.  I have dropped below a couple times, and yet I seem to manage to bounce back up rather quickly.  So I am pretty happy with that.  I am not at the personal goal I had set for myself of over 75k, but on the bright side, I am really happy with what I am getting, I think I am actually managing to get the development, the details and the little things that I always seem to let fall to the wayside, so I will accept that.  Besides, there is still time for me to try for my personal goal, but that this point I don’t think it is going to happen.

In other news:

I am taking a couple of online MOOC’s.  One is about The Future of Storytelling and it has been very intriguing.  I am even thinking to post some of my assignments/finds here.  Share them with you all.

The second class I have been taking is Inspiring Leadership through Emotional Intelligence .  It has been a very interesting class thus far.  I am a little behind on that one what with NaNo, the other class and life which always seems to get in the way, but you should check them out.

Well, that is all for today, I am heading back to write more for my NaNo Novel… peace out and happy writing!!!

If you check out those classes, please let me know if you join in!  They are really interesting.  Also, how are your NaNo novels coming along?  If you are not NaNoing, how goes your writing?

Words, Their Meanings and Influences

Recently in surfing through blogs I stumbled upon yet another idea that ties in with my definition and interpretation thoughts. There is yet another element to it all. It is those things that are completely unrelated that pop into our minds when we hear a word. Like those inkblot image tests. Words can evoke the same kind of response.
Now I am not saying that all words will do this to us, but I am finding more and more they do. We often like to use word trees to explore ideas, well this is similar to that. Think of it as a word tree. Take those words that mean something more to you than just their base definition and start thinking of the things that are unrelated, or maybe unrelated to others, of that word.

I will do this with Imagination. For me that word has more meaning than just the physical. The dictionary tells us that Imagination is:
Imaginationdefinition

To me Imagination is what gives us the creative process and ability to create in our minds. Now I will add the unrelated things that pop in my head when I hear or think of Imagination. Firstly I think of flying. I think because Imagination reminds me of Peter Pan. Now for how I think this affects my view of the word. To me, I think that it really makes me see imagination as flying high and giving the ability to create anything! It is freeing, in believing that anything is possible.

Now for your thoughts and opinions! Please share, what are some thoughts on words that you have completely unrelated words you associate with them? What are some words that you find you interpret differently than the definition?

NaNo Countdown Begins!

2013-ML-Vertical-Banner

And so it begins for me! The NaNoWriMo countdown! Any who have followed my blog for a while know that I LIVE for NaNo in all its marvelous forms. From Camp NaNo in the summer to full fledged NaNo in November! So please bear with me as I will am planning to write much the next couple months and take you on this journey with me. That said, I am rather excited for NaNo this year. I am once again ML and as I have been struggling with my writing I am hoping that this give it a kick start, and get me back fully in my writing groove. I have to make my 50k with my role as ML, so here is to an exciting idea, and a productive NaNo!!!

I have once again found my excitement for writing, now I just have to manage to get back in the habit of writing. With that in mind, I have been neglecting my blog a little as I am trying to plan for my novel this year. I think I have finally decided on what story I am going to write, but now is the hard part of planning some base characters, having them tell me their names, setting up some of the back story so I know a bit about the world they will be taking me to.

Now, I am more of a pantser, so this whole planning thing is a little hard. I no longer find it constricting as I have learned much from a few helpful websites and my own trial and error. Every year I participate in NaNo I have learned more about my writing style than I could have ever learned from any amount of books! I have also been reading through my newest copy of Writer’s Digest. It is one of the most helpful things I have found for inspiring my thought process and helping to learn new things for my writing craft. This months copy has been most helpful indeed.

So with that, what have you found to be helpful? What resources have taught you the most? What has been the most helpful to your writing? Are there websites you return to again and again? Are there books that are full of little flags and notes in the margin? Please share! I love learning of new resources.

Up and Coming

I am currently working on several posts for my blog, but as my thoughts seem to be scattered on the breeze it is not coming easy.  Also, NaNoWriMo is fast approaching and I am working at settling on an idea and getting some outlines fleshed out for that as well.  As ML again this year I need to work hard to make the goal of 50k, something that has never been a problem for me in the past, but lately, the wind is too busy scattering my thoughts.

I have the ideas, just lack the ability to make sense of the words I am getting on the paper, so please bare with me as I work on multiple projects at once.  Also, since I am missing my usual writing partners it seems the drive to write has also gone on hiatus… *grins* no worries, I am sure that will come back in full force soon.

What of you?  Anyone else gearing up for NaNo?  Do you try to plan out some base ideas to help keep the ball rolling?  And do you ever feel like the words are there, you just can’t make sense of them?

Please, as always share your thoughts!  Also as a side note, if anyone is looking for writing partners, I am always looking for more like minded individuals for the online writing group, more on that in a future posting.

More Definitions

So, I have come to realize in exploring the definitions of words and my inner interpretations I started with the wrong words, or at least skipped two very important ones! So with that, I am going to take a look at the two most important words, when looking at all others: Definition and Interpretation.

Definition literally means:

definition

This is a word I have never really thought of before. Never really thought about the distinct meaning and what it is to me. But when looking at it, well, I think of it as how we explain words on a broader scale. So that we as people can speak the same language and have a basis of what we mean. It is what gives tangibility to the words we use.

To me though, words can not be defined without some Interpretation, so here is a look at that word as well.

The dictionary tells us that Interpretation means:

interpretation
To me, interpretation is how an individual defines a word. It is how we as individuals see everything around us. Through the lens that is our view of the world. Every word, everything we see, everything we think and feel, it is all touched by interpretation. From ourself, others, everything around us. In some ways interpretation is a form of judgement.

Through the use of these two words, one really starts to realize how each and every one of us speaks our own language. There is common factors that help us to understand one another, and by being aware of our own definitions, our own interpretations I think it can help us grow as people and is something especially important for writers to look at. So I encourage you, if you have not before looked at the words you use, the world around you and how you view it, take a moment… what do the words mean to you?!?

As always I look forward to hearing from you all! Please share, your thoughts, your definitions for the words we use!

WIP Updates 4-1

Well, in keeping with my goals this week, and realizing how late it is in the week already I thought I would share with you a bit of Mo Thuras and its inspiration…

My synopsis (at least as it is right now):

Melody Joy is a woman captain in a male driven role. When she gets a unique piece of technology in the mail, after discovering the secret of a lifetime, she sets off on a journey of discovery. In her ship Mo Thuras, she sets out to find a planet no one has heard of and find a bit of her past.
Along the way she picks up a ragtag crew who, like her, are different and never seem to fit in. Always searching for a family of their own. Together they find a strength they never had before, along with a sense of belonging.
Finding new relationships after betrayal. Finding she is herself all along, this journey is filled with reflection and discovery.

This is the Playlist I have created:

I have found these songs really resonate with my main character Melody. Now a short interview clip from Melody herself!

Dreamland’s Insurgents*: Hi Melody! I want to start by saying, you’re incredibly brave for being a female captain in a man’s universe.
Melody Joy: Thanks so much for the kind words *blushes*
Dreamland’s Insurgents*: When this voyage to find your roots is over, what do you think you will do then?
Melody Joy: Well, after I find where I belong… and who I really am, I figure I will know what I am suppose to do. I mean, really it is just so hard, not knowing who I am.
Dreamland’s Insurgents*: What are you hoping to find on your world of origin, and what do you want to take away with you?
Melody Joy: I really just hope that by finding my home I can finally figure out who I am, who I am suppose to be. I really want to take a sense of finally belonging… somewhere. To find my place, and fit in.

*Special thanks to Dreamland’s Insurgents for these inspiring questions.

What about you? Are there different things you do to help you get “in that space” when you are having trouble writing? Things that make you instantly think of your story?!?  Do you find working on your synopsis helpful in drafting your story?  DO you make playlists from music that reminds you of your WIP?  Do you find interviews to be helpful ways to get to know your characters?
